Doug Aitken: UNDER THE SUN, India

Case Details

Presented at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) Art House in Mumbai, UNDER THE SUN marked acclaimed American artist Doug Aitken's first exhibition in India. On the third floor, a monumental cylindrical light sculpture formed part of The Future, creating an immersive environment of light, color and movement.

Working with lighting and sound designer Andi Watson, Seekway Innovations was responsible for the lighting production, providing the 3D lighting solution, dynamic effect development and an integrated control system configured specifically for the installation. Measuring 6 meters in height and 6 meters in diameter, the suspended structure brought together 361 LED light strips and 207,936 spatial voxels to translate the project's creative direction into a physical, three-dimensional light experience.

01 / THE CHALLENGE
Translating Creative Intent into Light

The challenge extended far beyond building a large cylindrical lighting structure. The installation had to translate a highly specific creative vision into light — balancing color, movement, spatial depth and visual rhythm across a three-dimensional volume.

At the same time, the 6-meter-high, 6-meter-diameter suspended structure introduced significant engineering considerations, from the arrangement of hundreds of LED light strips to weight, structural integration and system reliability.

All of this had to be developed within a compressed production schedule. The lighting effects therefore went through an iterative process of programming, testing and refinement, allowing the physical installation to remain closely aligned with the lighting designer's creative direction.

02 / THE SOLUTION
207,936 Voxels in a Six-Meter Volume

Seekway Innovations developed the lighting production around its 3D qTube solution, configuring 361 LED light strips with 576 individually addressable voxels per strip — a total of 207,936 voxels distributed throughout the cylindrical volume.

Rather than treating the lighting hardware and control as separate systems, the installation was delivered as an integrated solution. The LED light strips, dynamic effects and dedicated control system were configured together to support precise playback and coordinated three-dimensional light behavior across the structure.

Through repeated effect testing and refinement, color transitions, movement and spatial patterns were adjusted to respond to the lighting designer's creative direction, turning the cylindrical structure into a dynamic volumetric medium for The Future.
