What is a voxel?

A voxel, short for “Volume Element” (also known as volumetric pixel), is the smallest fundamental unit in three-dimensional space. Similar to how a pixel forms the basis of 2D images, a voxel possesses real X, Y, and Z coordinates, giving it actual volume and depth to create genuine three-dimensional visuals.

Pixel vs Voxel: What’s the Difference?

Pixel: A two-dimensional element that exists only on an X-Y plane, forming the flat images we see on regular screens and displays.
Voxel: A true three-dimensional unit arranged in an X-Y-Z matrix. While traditional 3D films and VR only simulate depth through visual tricks, voxels enable real volumetric displays that can be viewed naturally from any angle without glasses.
